Of A Wet Night & Silly Dances

posted by FH2o

A delicious 'wetness' that is visually appealing or maybe I'm just strange!
Traffic was heavy and so was the rain.

I was kindly invited by Alex to join her family and friends for a chinese dinner at the VIP Room of "The Banquet" on Monday night. It rained on my way to the restaurant which held up the traffic a bit but gave me a chance to try out my new Fujifilm Finepix F40fd digital camera which though a compact camera has a 'super CCD' supposedly giving better performance under low light, blah, blah, blah. I don't really care much for fancy technical features as I'd like to think that it's the photographer not the camera that makes the difference as most of the earlier simply stunning photos in this blog is taken with a simple 2 megapixels camera! Anyway it doesn't hurt either to have a better camera.
Amusing dances; and I'm being kind and polite ...

Back to the dinner. It was my first time dining in the VIP room of this newly opened restaurant and I really did not know what to expect; and certainly not the contrived setting and stories laid upon us as the meals were served with live Chinese instrumental music and dancing girls! I would have choked on such bullshit superficiality but for the excellent (though slightly cold) food being served. It was quite an enjoyable dining 'experience'. Thanks again Alex for your company and the invitation.
Goose web feet anyone? It's better just to eat without knowing what it is first!
3 different meats - including pigeon! Guess which one?

Where do you stand in the storm of life?
Lone trees at lake edge @ Riveria, Kuching. 27 August 2007

The mood in the office was somber as the pressures of meeting the deadline(s) before Friday builds up and this is further compounded by erroneous comments by those who talk but don’t do but who unfortunately are higher up in the pecking order and which therefore cannot be casually dismissed. I am glad I do not allow myself to be caught up in such nonsense a situation having ‘been there and experienced it before’ to ever want to go there again. There is simply no need to be cornered like this but in the stage of life there are ample clowns and slaves drones to play these roles.
Storm clouds gather over lake at Desa Ilmu, 27 August 2007; whilst dark clouds hang over those who fail to meet deadlines! Such are the joys of working your lives away ...

Perhaps we can all learn a little from Buddy who took advantage of the early morning downpour to frolic in it completely ignoring that fact that he was just washed and groomed on Sunday!

Trusting that your work week ahead would not be so testy. *sigh*

Left: Buddy has no need for pretense - he just "be" who he is; enjoying and playing in the now.

Visiting Barcelona and Madrid

posted by FH2o

I have not visited Spain before and when I do the 2 major cities of Madrid, the capital, and Barcelona would definitely be on the list to visit what with the various attractions and nightlife these 2 cities have to offer.

Madrid is the capital of and the largest city in Spain. Art and culture are central to Madrid life and the city has 73 museums that cover all fields of human knowledge. Of these, the most important are the Prado Museum, one of the world's greatest art galleries, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum with more than 800 paintings, sculptures and tapestries that go from the earliest Dutch masters to the most avantguard trends, and the Reina Sofía National Art Centre, which is dedicated to Spanish contemporary art, with works by Picasso, Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí and Juan Gris among others. Madrid's happening nightlife is another major attraction. Its pubs, bars, discos and flamenco clubs have a tremendous atmosphere, while by day there are traditional verbenas (open-air dances), popular festivals or the San Isidro bullfighting festival - rated as the world's most important.

Barcelona is Spain’s second largest city and a major economic center with attractive parks and beaches with a 4.5km long coastline. The area around the Plaça Catalunya makes up the city's historical centre and, alongside the upper half of Avinguda Diagonal, is the main commercial area of the city. Barcelona's cultural roots go back 2000 years and the city is designated as a world-class city by the Globalization and World Cities Study Group and Network. Barcelona in fact won the 1999 RIBA Royal Gold Medal for its architecture, the first (as of 2007, only) time that the winner has been a city, and not an individual architect. Barcelona houses a great number of museums, which cover different areas and eras.

Due to my rather demanding and hectic work schedule, any trips to Barcelona and Madrid would most likely be a last minute affair for me. And fortunately Cheaperthanhotels offers last minute and year round accommodation at hotels , apartments and hostels in Spain at prices generally less than direct, with free inclusions and use of facilities. And both bookings for hotels in Madrid and hotels in Barcelona can be found on Cheaperthanhotels website; as well as for Hoteles en Barcelona.

With hotels in Madrid and hotels in Barcelona ranging from 1 star to 5 stars; there is a range to suit every budget.

Sunday Slack

posted by FH2o

My flight back from KL on Saturday night was delayed by over one and an half hour and by the time I got home it was way past midnight. In fact by the time I went to bed it was nearly 2 am. That put to rest any plans for early morning kayaking on Sunday.

And so I slept in for once and besides going out for late breakfast with my other half; I spent the rest of the day hanging around the house - doing nothing; and that was nice. Trusting that your Sunday was pleasant too.

But yesterday I was an obedient boy and decided to comply with the announcement to only switch on my phone inside the terminal building - only to discover then that my handphone was missing! It must had slipped out of my pocket. Needless to say whoever found it did not return it. Damn sien one!

And as some of you may had noticed - I'm tweaking the layout of this blog to tidy it up a bit as it had long been neglected. Maybe it's about time I switch over to Wordpress? Any advice anyone?

Irregardless, here's wishing you all a Wonderful Weekend whether you look great or otherwise!

Blue skies and Thursday blues

I am supposed be on the waters of Tasik Temengor with Huey come Friday morning but instead I’ll be in KL for another project meeting and back on Saturday evening. Damn sien one!

Dark FH2o blues ...

It’s not Tasik Temengor but I hope to be on the waters come Sunday morning. Suddenly I don’t feel so bad as I was a moment ago. I'll close my eyes and float away imaging the last trip I took with Huey in Chiangmai despite the damned dams, a bridge too far and all ...

And if I'm required to work on Sunday again; the long antlers of the elk will be put to good use - up somebody's you know where! I don't particularly care especially in the light of the bitter experience of those who put in more than their fair share of work but which sadly are not reciprocated ... I suppose it's a mistake to presume that an organisation has a heart much less a soul. Whatever. Just leave me to my misery and let me sulk ... for just a little while more. *sigh*

Big Issues

posted by FH2o

Big Clouds over Kuching, 22nd August 2007

We're having big board meetings over the past few days with big issues being discussed and sweat over by 'big people'. Which of course to me begs the big questions about the meaning of it all in the big picture of life, to those whose small little lives are focussed on which are ultimately small stuffs in the end. But then again what do I know? ;)

Perhaps it would be less taxing to ponder on small stuff such as why male elks have such long antlers and which is aptly answered by the picture below which I first saw here.

Some questions are more easily answered than others.

Honeymoon Kayaking

posted by FH2o

Heidi was all smiles for Kalle on Sg Sarawak Kanan, Bau 19 August 2007

Kalle and Heidi from Vantaa (near Helsinki) , Finland are on a honeymoon and instead of taking a cruise as most boring people do; opt to do our rainforest kayaking trip on Sungai Sarawak Kanan on Sunday, 19th August 2007 in the Bau area. Kalle booked our trip by email after chancing on www.kuchingkayak.com while googling for information on Sarawak.

Love as timeless as the rainforest

So how did the Finnish couple find our trip? They absolutely loved it especially Kalle who had been on an ice field mountain in Norway just two months ago. It was an "incredible experience" for them so I didn't want to spoil the magic by pointing out that the 'misty fog' was in fact the onset of our infamous haze! *ahem*.

Not your typical finnish landscape right Kalle?

Now that we have honeymoon kayaking - how about a kayak wedding on the waters in our rain forest? Takers anyone? The wedding photography on the waters is complimentary!

The magic of our rainforest - minus the haze

Friday Dental Visit

posted by FH2o

It's not easy to take a self-portrait lying down and not be noticed as well! And I think I did well.

I had a shock when one of my tooth came off in the midst of chewing on some food over dinner last night! It was a tooth that had a root canal treatment back in 2004 - that was back in the days before I started blogging. Unfortunately I needed another root canal treatment in November last year which I mentioned in my blog. Fortunately or unfortunately that tooth was quite tough resulting in some the broken drill bits still left embedded in it!

Would Dr Goh be upset if he found out that while he was working on my tooth, I was working on getting a candid shot of him? He sounded friendly and nice enough.

Luckily there was a dentist just across the road from my office and he managed to slot me in today to get the fillings done when someone canceled their appointment in the last minute. To take my mind off the anxiety of a dental visit; I couldn't help myself in taking these stealth shots when the dentist and his assistance were not looking! I know - I can be quite juvenile sometimes ...
Perhaps the dentist suspected that I was trying to capture him - hence the visor? ;)

And it's not as 'gruesome' as the ones I took last June at the hospital when I had that rather unfortunate accident with the bungee cords. Ouch! (We now strictly use cam straps only, thank you).

Have an enjoyable weekend ahead but do not bite off more than you can chew OK!

I think either I have a monopoly on this or everyone else is just not looking! Hmm.

Morning light show over Tabuan Jaya Baru 1 & 2 on 16 August 2007

And what are the chances of spotting a sun halo in Kuching? Slim? And how about spotting it on two consecutive days? Never? But I did! And here are the photos of the icebow/sun halo that I spotted this morning before I left for work. It disappeared shortly after I had alerted a few of my friends via sms. Sorry guys - but it was there and here's proof! While I was busy snapping away I received an sms from Danny alerting me to this phenomenon - thanks Danny!

Looking at these photos; I think I'll be forgiven for being late for work to day. Or maybe not! So - shhhh!

I think it's a full halo but I can't be certain standing from where I was. And it's one of those times when you wished you have a wide angle lens!

Half Icebow in Kuching

posted by FH2o

Another amazing Kuching sky phenomenon on a Wednesday morning, 15 August 2007

About two months back on Friday, 22nd June 2007 I gushed about the miracle of a rainbow halo around the sun around midday after being alerted to it by friends.

Also last month there was one reported over the skies at Langkawi and the newspaper called it an “icebow” and explained it as such - An Icebow is a phenomenon similar to a rainbow, except that it is formed by the refraction of sunlight through cloud-suspended ice crystals, instead of raindrops or water drops suspended in the air. The ice crystals are from cirrus clouds and have to be of the type with a large radius for the phenomenon to take place.

Anyway, again this morning my colleague asked me if I’d received any sms about a half rainbow halo around the sun. I didn't but I felt immediately better and I dropped everything and immediately rushed outside to take this snaps.

And I took tons of pictures (sweating in my tie and half-blinded by the glaring light) trying to get the most pleasing composition for the 'perfect' image to do justice to this beautiful and amazing sight. This time I managed to find a tree behind the office block to act as a foreground to this amazing sight. Did anyone else in Kuching saw this fleeting icebow? Not as jaw-dropping as the one we saw in June but amazing nonetheless. Anyway I am glad I did and who says skies are boring? *wink*

VMY'07 : Welcome To Our Haze Season

posted by FH2o

Bellowing smokes spotted on Sunday, 12 August 2007 @ Borneo Highlands somewhere near Kg Karu; and coming to a city near you.

We were on our way back from Kg Semadang after a fun-filled day of kayaking when we spotted bellowing clouds of smoke up ahead in the distance. Thinking that it could have been a forest fire, we were soon corrected by passing the villagers there that it was actually deliberate forest burnings to clear the land for farming; as the hot and dry weather over the past week had created perfect conditions to do this. They were certainly right. Malaysia boleh. *sigh*

Perfectly dark clouds over perfectly blue skies in an inperfect world

Don't hold your breathe as I guess they'll soon be doing pretty much the same thing - except on a much bigger and grander scale over on the other side of the Bengoh range in Kalimantan Indonesia. Welcome to the coming haze season folks. *gasp*

Millions of Us - Yet We're Alone!

Millions of clouds on a Kuching Friday morning, 10th August 2007

I was invited to a class reunion dinner last Friday night by one of my wife's classmate so that I could keep her Canadian husband company in the presence of so many females.

Mystery of life - millions are crowded together and yet they remained apart.

It was a very nice dinner in a very nice restaurant in pleasant company but I couldn't help but wondered why it was that more than half of the ladies there that night were still single! Nothing wrong with that of course but I guessed the reason(s) for remaining unmarried are personal and private - so I prudently decided not to pry by making small talk out of this fact; but being the busybody ever curious person that I am; I still wondered! Any ideas anyone? Whatever.

Another beautiful and mysterious Kuching morning sky - and a mystery why I seemed to encounter them most of the time!

Purvanes is probably one of the most clumsy un-coordinated beginner that I had come across and I was kinda worried as she was with a group of journalists/writers on a "FAM Trip" with Sarawak Convention Bureau who were checking out our kayaking trips; and she would be in the same kayak as me. Great.

Turned out that I needn't have to worry as she soon took to kayaking as I did to eating roti prata. We survived the trip and she went back to KL (with a nice tan) to write this nice article about our trip in TTG Asia which is the most established (30 years)and trusted travel trade newspaper in Asia with the largest circulation which means that over 16,800 people will get to learn about our kayaking trip this week!
