Buah Terap - Exotic Tropical Fruit

posted by FH2o

I took my old classmate Tiong Kiat, who now lives in Auckland and works at the University of Auckland's Bioengineering Institute as a Systems Manager and her ten year old daughter Kimberly (who loves kayaking), when they were on holidays in Kuching; out kayaking at Borneo Highlands. Tiong Kiat is only one of a handful of people I know that writing code in assembly language is “easy”! To say that he is ‘smart’ is an understatement and Tiong Kiat was horrified to learn that an almost as smart classmate like me does not know what it is, much less tasted a ‘buah Terap’ – one of the mandatory exotic fruits he must take whenever he visits Sarawak; when we chanced upon some villagers at Kg Danu returning with their harvests of fruits which included buah Terap. Incidentally, 'buah' in malay means 'fruit'.

So after he left Kuching, I resolved to find out more about this mysterious buah Terap, whom Tiong Kiat claimed tastes better than durians! That I would certainly like to find out!
And as luck would have it, on one of my weekend kayaking trips where we take out at Kg Git; I sawnot one but a big pile of the buah Teraps at the patio of one of the houses in the village! The house owner confirmed that it was indeed buah Terap and showed me the huge tree that grew next to the river that bore these fruits. The tree must have been over 3 stories high and there were still some hard to reach fruits up on the tree. The tree would only fruit once a year and not every year. So it's a rare treat when the fruits are in season which must also be plucked while still on the tree as by the time it fully ripens, the fruits would fall and get smashed on the ground as the outer shell would be soft and not protective. It is not readily available in the market and are sold quite expensively; assuming that you can even find them. So it was my lucky day.
I was given 3 fruits and told to wait for a couple of days for it to ripen fully before eating. The fruit would give off a nice distinctive fragrance and would open easily then. Finally after the third day I opened one of the fruits and tasted my first buah Terap which to me tasted a bit ike a chempedak -some similarity but more delicate, aromatic and sweeter. I like it but I still prefer my durians! Have anyone of you tasted a buah terap? I would highly recommend that you do!

Traffic Jam @ Bengoh

posted by FH2o

The 'put-in' at Bengoh is one of the most unexpected and pleasant surprise as the beautiful tributary Sg Abang, which leads to Sg Sarawak Kiri, is down below and hidden from view from the approach road. The small concrete footpath leading down to it is narrow and if we have more than a few participants on a trip, there would be a small ‘traffic-jam’ of kayaks and people as everyone eagerly awaits to get on to the beautiful waters. However it is a traffic jam that everyone is happy to put up with (have you heard laughters and seen happy smiling faces at a traffic jam before?) and there are no toll(s) either on the highway that they're getting on!

FH2o in Caricatures

posted by FH2o

My daughter KH2o loves to doodle on the computer screen with “Paint”, the default MS program in ‘Accessories’ and with too much time on her hand on the weekend from not doing her homework, she came up these caricatures of me (with buddy too - who was also not spared!) …

Is she being creative or just being deliriously happy from the iPod video that my sister from Sydney has given her and her younger brother Jimaz (as he liked to be called) as presents? What do you think and please keep any unflattering remarks about a striking likeness to me to yourself … *sigh*

BTW she forgot about the pink kayak but I was not about to remind her! Have a snigger or two and have a great week ahead!

Sunless Sunday

posted by FH2o

It rained the entire night and it was still raining when I woke up and I decided to cancel the kayaking trip after looking at the dense dark clouds and rain blocking out the sun. I was right to cancel the trip as it rained the entire day and the river would have been quite swollen with all that down pour.

The rain stopped for just a little while to allow me to snap the above sunset photo before it came down in buckets again!

I took the opportunity to go out for breakfast with my other half and to the wet market with her after that to buy some vegetables for lunch and dinner. Then I laze around the house listening to music, did some reading, chatted with my children, visited a friend, went out for coffee with another to catch up and came back to play with Buddy. Nice really. See - there's more to life than just kayaking even for FH2o!

It's Raining - So?

posted by FH2o

That's why it's called the "rain" forest.

However, somehow it's hard for some folks to understand that one will get wet when embarking on a 'rainforest kayaking adventure' down a jungle river. Whilst there are others who relish the once-in-a-lifetime experience of getting drenched under an unexpected waterfall on a kayak.

Go out this weekend - get wet. And learn to live.

Wishing you all a captivating weekend!

Taking it Easy

posted by FH2o

Chris, George, Kwang & Francis Ding wanted to try out their new kayaks and we arranged to meet up at a coffee shop at the 7th Mile on sunday morning for breakfast before embarking on our adventures. This being a 'maiden' voyage, we wanted to take it easy although the weather has other plans with intermittent heavy rains for the past couple of days prior to the trip and a threatening sky on that morning. I was concerned that the water levels may be too high and the flow too fast but when we reached Kg Semadang, I was relieved to find that the conditions were still within safety limits.

We were joined by James Ong, brothers Wee and Yat, and Steven Hogg from Brisbane who was on holidays in Kuching. Chris and George also brought along their sons. We set off from Kg Semadang for a leisurely float down to Kg Git, by which time we were already planning for our next kayaking trip!
Here are the photos of our antics adventures on a wet but fun-filled sunday morning. Join us next time will ya? ;)

Be Prepared

posted by FH2o

While there are some people who take our trips totally unprepared, there are others who come fully geared up and equipped as if we are embarking on a multi-days expedition instead of a 3 hours trip! And they are prepared for any Class of rapids we may encounter along the way as can be seen from the dry case(s) they bring along to keep their 'personal effects' dry. *sigh*

I hate it when people call you at the eleventh hour to tell you that they are not taking a trip they had confirmed for whatever crap reason(s). You know that it's just a lame excuse when they had changed their fucking fickle minds. Serve us right for not demanding a deposit in the first place. Some people can be so full of the brown stuff, oblivious to the efforts and preparations we had to put in prior to the trip. We'll get over this in a little while. *sigh*

Blowin' In The Wind

Why do people find it hard to give a little bit of themselves and their time?
Why can't people care a little bit about other people other than their immediate families?
Why do people invite the entire church congregation (whom they hardly know) to attend their wedding dinner and not people whom they know and see everyday at work just because they are not 'christians'?
Why do people equate success in life purely with how much money the person has?
Why do people already grow old at 35?
Why do people keep doing the same thing and expecting different results?
Why do people always think that they are more important than anyone else?
Why are people afraid to try new things?
Why do people think that 'their' God is more superior?
Why do people think that they can find and get to know God from a book?
Have these people really experienced God in a house of worship?
Why do these people have so little faith that their God would protect or save them?
Why don't rich bloggers who display 'make poverty history' realise that they are just hypocrites?
Why do we elect greedy, corrupt, incompetent and useless politicians to be our leaders?
Why aren't we in East Malaysia kept informed on the scale and severity of the flood disasters in West Malaysia?
... etc,

Maybe we just don't think at all and maybe the answer is blowin' in the wind ...

Why don't I shut up and just put up pretty pictures.

Whatever happened to www.sixthseal.com? Like the strange 'chemically' coloured sky above, it's a mystery but whatever is going on for Poh Huai Bin, I wished him well; even though I don't know him personally apart from being an occasional reader of his original, brave, raw but honest blog; however controversial it may be. This picture is for you Huai Bin; and if you happen to be reading this - do get your 'shits' back together again soon as we missed your blog; which hopefully could take on a more positive direction and not necessarily be on a self-destructive path ...

Pink Kayak!

posted by FH2o

Last year I ordered 4 kayaks from Najib in KL. 3 of them were for my friends and they were delivered today to George’s house; one of the guys who bought a kayak. I had a fleet of yellow-red swirl coloured kayaks and so I ordered one of the same colour with instructions to Najib that the other three to be in different colours so that we can all individually identify our kayaks as they are all of the same make and model – perception ‘Surge’.

As it turned out the red-white swirl coloured kayak turned out to PINK in colour and none of the other 3 macho-guys would be seen dead sitting in one!

So if you spot someone paddling a pink kayak on the waters; guess who would be on it? First an orange sunset yesterday and now a pink kayak! I would never have suspected that my life would be this colourful. *sigh* OK, you can stop laughing now before I smack you with my paddles ...

Orange Sunset

posted by FH2o

"Dee, did you see the orange sunset outside?" My daughter asked me yesterday evening after dinner as I was getting ready to go out.

I hurried to get my camera and the first shot was blurred due to my haste (I get excited over stuffs like this) in trying to capture the fleeting light. Later I realised that it makes a nice contrast to the sharper shots I took and I'd placed them side by side in the above composition.

Put-in @ Kg Abang, Borneo Highlands. Kuching

posted by FH2o

The put-in at Kg Abang / Simpang Empat at Borneo Highlands at a sandy banks just beneath a steel bridge with the mist covered mountains in the background and lush vegetation on both banks of the river is simply stunning. On an early misty sunday morning we set off for Kg Git. Heavy rains during this monsoon season ensured that the water levels were high and gave us a fast thrilling run (especially over the 4 rapids!) but we still took over five and a half-hour to reach our destination; exhausted but elated. During the dry season, we would have taken twice as long. What were you doing on sunday morning? ;)

Sunset Trees @ Bau

posted by FH2o

We had to wait for this duo who were trailing behind the group and when we finally got out of the river, the sun was already setting. As we were putting up and tieing down the kayaks, I noticed the beautiful lights silhouetted against the trees and bracing the camera against the roof racks, I quickly grabbed a few shots before the beautiful lights disappeared.

It was amazing how the colours of the sunlight can change over a short span of time as I was re-framing and zooming in to get a different composition for a tigher shot. Later on I wondered if the chinese group of professional photographers with their super expensive Canon EOS 1Ds saw what I saw and perhaps it was I who managed the best shot of the day with my humble consumer-grade Pentax Optio43WR! *ahem*Here's wishing you a wonderful weekend and may you see wonderful and amazing lights and sights!

China Kayaking in Kuching

posted by FH2o

Twenty four media representatives from China, who are part of the Visit Malaysia 2007 Mega FAM (familiarisation trip) media group, were in Kuching and STB (Sarawak Tourism Board) had organised for them to experience kayaking through the rainforests with us. Great!

One group (9) is from Shanghai while the other more sedate group (15) is from Beijing. We took the Shanghai group out first while the Beijing group was out on another tour bus taking in the sights elsewhere in Kuching.

The Shanghai group were a young, animated and lively bunch and were eager to get on the waters to go kayaking! Luckily the weather was good as it had been raining the past week. Unfortunately I couldn't join them as I have to organise the ground logistics for the next kayaking group. But I was at the take-out at the "Mini Wild Animal Farm" a.k.a. "Turn Red Restaurant" to greet them. And they all greeted me with big smiles and appreciation for the 'fantastic and fabulous' experience! According to Azmi, Bev and Ivy who were guiding them, they were good kayakers and nobody went for a swim!
Then we had to transport the kayaks back to krokong to await the arrival of the bigger group of 15 from Beijing.
Thanks to the efficiency of Stanley of Unicatay, the tour bus arrived on the dot and 15 people armed to the teeth with Canon EOS 1Ds and assorted lens descended on sleepy Krokong. I have never seen so many people with so many cameras doing our kayaking trip before and quickly cautioned them about bringing them on the kayaks. Ivy and I estimated that there were easily RM500K worth of cameras and gear that afternoon!
As you can imagine with such a big group of eager journalists, it was quite a handful, in the sorting out and briefing before we could get them on the waters and it was getting late in the evening! But luckily the weather was still holding up.
One guy quickly 'reserved' the only single kayak we brought along meant for our guide and before we could stop him had paddled off with it but stopped a distance away when we hollered at him. When we finally set off, we found him a little further on with a very sad look on his face as he had capsized together with over RM30K worth of photographic equipment - ouch!

Unfortunately he was not the only recalcitrant paddler that afternoon as another 2 kayaks (with expensive cameras as well) went for a swim when they disregarded our instructions and pick their own 'line' on the river - ouch, OUCH!
Carmen, Editor from the reknown 'Outside' magazine was (fortunately) with me and was very happy to keep her camera dry and manage to capture some amazing shots. She promised to send me a couple of those shots and also a book which she has authored. Lucky me!
We reached the take-out relieved that no other Beijing kayakers were taking a swim! But we have to wait for the last kayak (accompanied by Bev who have to wait for the 2 guys on the kayak) to return before we could get out of the water in the dying evening light. In the end we had to tie up the kayaks with the help of torch lights!

I stayed back for the farewell dinner hosted by Sarawak Tourism Board, with the Minister of Urban Development and Tourism Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh as the guest of honour and STB CEO Gracie Geikie (who kindly invited me to join her at the VIP table) at 'Turn Red Restaurant' while Azmi, Bev and Ivy headed back to Kuching exhausted by the fun and excitement of China kayaking! What a great start to kayaking in 2007!

Busy Weekend Blur

posted by FH2o

Sometimes we are so occupied and busy that things seemed to be one big rush and a blur ... and the weekend that was, was one ... Here's the story.

On Friday night, my wife ‘dragged’ me to attend this ‘sharing presentation’ from her friends in Singapore together with their ‘upline’ from Perth at De Summit on this wonderful health supplements from the US. Though not exactly new to ‘Multilevel Network Marketing’ having joined a couple over the years (who hasn’t in Malaysia, the world’s MLM ‘dumping grounds’, must be living in a hole): I was nonetheless pleasantly surprised to learn that USANA supplements had been independently tested to be the ‘best’ in the world. If that’s true, then it’s a no-brainer as I currently take supplements (Vitamin C, B Complex, Vitamin E, Cal-Mag0 and I would only want to take the best. So if I do sign up; then those of you who may want to take supplements can then contact me and be my ‘down-lines’ thereby making me a ‘diamond’ in a couple of years with 5-figure passive income … and so the ‘story’ goes.

On Saturday, Azmi had to take emergency leave to help his dad sort out some land matters problems in Sibu leaving me to take the Jones’s from the UK for some rainforest kayaking in Borneo Highland. Fortunately Lars, a Norwegian, whom I had recently met with his local wife who hails from Kg Semadang was able to help out to be my ‘shuttle’ driver. But unfortunately my car battery died on me in the morning (I also had battery problems with my camera. Coincidence?) I had to ‘jumper lead’ start my car to get a new battery delaying the trip by over an hour. Fortunately the Jones were understanding and didn’t mind the delay. (Actually one of them had a bit too much to drink the night before and was glad for the extra rest!) I had bad luck with the car battery but wonderful luck with the weather with clear blue skies after a rainy week. The Jones siblings absolutely love the kayaking trip and would be telling the whole wide world (or rather the Lonely Planet) about their ‘fantastic’ experience and what a wonderful guide I am … blah blah blah! They labeled themselves as ‘our most satisfied customer’ and wanted to sign our Guest Book, which unfortunately we do not have and which I will now get! They were particularly impressed that this country boy can speak the engrish as well as them! Wait till they read my blog! Ho ho ho!

I was organizing a re-union dinner on Saturday night for one of our schoolmate whom we had not met in over 30 years! There were no phone signals in the Borneo Highlands and when we reached the 13th mile, a flood of sms came in! The original restaurant that I booked screwed up - they have no table for us as they are overbooked and want to tuck us in one corner with a big birthday celebration; so I had to hurriedly find another place for us to meet and to inform everyone else accordingly. *sigh* We ended up in Jambu Restaurant which everyone later agreed was a good choice for the ambience and food.

I do not know why I’m always the de-facto organizer for these dinners but I’ve made an interesting observation when I send out invites first by email, then sms and when I still do not get the courtesy of a reply, I would then call the person up personally. More often than not I would get the following disheartening replies:-

  • Too tired or ‘sian’ to go out lah! TV or vegetating at home is preferable to re-acquainting old friendship.
  • Too short notice. I wonder how much notice I should give. Surely we are not so super busy high flying executives that one or two weeks notice are required?
  • Too busy and from the tone of their voice - don’t bother to ask me what I’m busy with …
  • Sorry but the weekends and evenings are ‘family time’. Hello? You mean I do NOT spend time with my family? (Actually my wife and kids are sometimes glad that I'm out of the house!)

Unfortunately most people are too caught up in their own self-importance and this ‘me-first’ mentality rules their life. But generally I just politely ignore them - to me these people are just being old. But never mind.

I got home from dinner and my wife wanted to know if I’m able to take the Australian couple from perth’s three young children kayaking. So I called Bev late and mercifully she was able to help as Azmi (who was supposed to be back on Saturday evening) who I learned later had car problems and was stuck in Sibu.

So on Sunday morning I went to pick up Stephanie 5, Sarah 12 and Keith 14 with Stephanie talking non-stop from then till we (gratefully) returned them to their parents! We decided to throw in a surprise for them at the end of the trip – where we would take-out. The trip is actually a reccee as we have a big group booking on Monday (more on this when I find the time). We put-in at Krokong with Bev taking the 2 girls and Keith with me. Stephanie, though noisy, asked the most penetrating questions and we delight in her company. We finally reached the take-out after collecting some unique looking pebbles along the way. The take-out was at the “Mini Wild Animal Farm” where we were met by an ostrich which had somehow escaped from the enclosure. I had to use my paddle to shoo it away! The kids and Bev had a wonderful time looking at the animals which included goats, wild pigs, deers, camels, eagles, horses, etc while I sorted out the kayaking gears. After a nice lunch we drove back to Kuching to drop off the children with Stephanie keeping us amused with her incessant questioning!

I had ordered a few more kayaks but they had not arrived in time; so I had to borrow/rent kayaks from my fellow kayakers. So after a quick dinner I had to go and pick up the kayaks for the big trip on Monday all the time wondering if Azmi would be back in time to help me to handle this group. As a contingency I called up my old kayaker friend Ivy to see if she would be able to help – and she could! Yipee. And more of this story on my next post. Now I’ll see if I can sort out the photos to go with this post … failing which this shall be one of my rare ‘no-photo’ posts. Hmmm
