(Another) Sg Sarawak Sunset (so shoot me!)

posted by FH2o

So this is another one of those scenery photos that I love to take and some of you love to gripe about! *sigh*

I know, I know. Some of you may say that it’s all the same old picture; but is it? The sun rises and the sun sets and so another day begins and end. Is today the stale repetition of yesterday or of the day before that? So if it looks the same and today is the same old day – take heed as you’re getting stale and boring!

Yes, this is another sunset photo but it is not the same sunset nor the same photo! Be new!

And to all my dayak friends and readers - Selamat Hari Gawai Dayak but do go easy on the tuak!

IADA – I’m A Darn Ass!

posted by FH2o

I am an ass and I want to kick myself … I needed my passport to travel for the long Gawai Holidays Weekend and realise that I’d forgotten to collected it after having it renewed it last year. So on the way to work, I went to collect my passport. Well, guess what? There’s a 3 months period after which our efficient gahmen would cancel and destroy it. They can be efficient when you don’t want them to be. Which means that I do not have a passport to travel (which my other half would skin me alive) and it would cost me another RM300/- to renew it which I had already paid for when I renewed the passport. Damn!

So how am I feeling right now? Just take a look at the photo. It would be advisable to keep a safe distance from me. I do not make very good company this morning.

Over The Rainbow

I was really fortunate to come across a rainbow the other day while I was driving on the way home from a kayaking trip and I took a few quick grab shots; and was even luckier to be able to capture it.
I was 'over the rainbow' over this!

So what are your favourite sights?

Morning Reflections

posted by FH2o

The trees and the morning sky reflected on the surface of the incoming tide partly submerging the lower platform of the jetty at our house. Relishing these quiet moments as I reflect on this daily cycle of nature and the passage of time; I took these few shots before I set off for the office.

And on the passage of time; congratulations to IML for turning 21; twice last week! Her short but sweet reflective post ponders life thus far and the next 21 ahead!

What do you reflect on in the morning?

Blogger Templates from PANNASMONTATA TEMPLATES

posted by FH2o

Those of you who are like me that are ‘forever’ unhappy or dissatisfied with the ‘look’ of their blog would be searching for new templates to use; would be happy with this post! Not that I change my templates that often.

Anyway I chanced upon “Pannasmontata Templates” by Cristina from Trieste, Italy; who is studying architecture and she has some really, really nice and beautifully designed templates for Blogger both in 2 columns as well as 3 columns formats! Cool! Here are some teasers screenshots taken from her site. And if you want to use the templates, please read and respect the rules.

So for those of you who wants a site make-over or those contemplating starting their own blogs, this is an excellent place to browse. There's something for everyone. Grazie Cristina!

Smoke On The Water

posted by FH2o

Apart from the unintended (and numerous) swims, we had a fun but pretty much uneventful and peaceful float down the Sungai Sarawak Kanan today. ;)

Joe wanted to share the joys of kayaking through the rainforest and invited his friends Gilbert, Felicity, Alvin and "I-Love-Swimming!" Jeffrey to come along. Bev was with me to keep everyone in check, kind of, as she went swimming too! Guess who was the only dry person in the group? Heehee!

Anyway here are some pics and the smokers (they needed their ocassional 'power-stick' breaks) informed me that the smoke was necessary to help keep the sand flies away!

And drinking keeps the bad spirits at bay too right?

Home Baked Magic

posted by FH2o

My wife and daughter had been busy the past few nights baking cookies – chocolate chips, double chocolate and ‘twinkle delight’; so that KH2o can sell them during the school’s musical concert to raise funds for her class’s prom night. I’ve never heard of such things in my olden days.

But it was sheer delight to see mother and daughter’s bonding through baking and an even greater delight to savor the freshly baked cookies which is perfect with my cappuccino! Yes, perfect! "Life is like a box of cookies ..."

Many thanks to all the bloggers who bought the cookies at the "mini-blogger's meet" organised by Laksa (on the far left) last night at Coffee Bean @ Sarawak Plaza to meet up with Pelf the 'riverine-turtles-expert' from West Malaysia. Hmmm, who's that big guy (with so far still intact body parts) at the far right of the picture on my left who made a brief appearance?

The Tale of the Painted Breast

posted by FH2o

Ha ha! I knew that would get your attention! The title is true but it's not that kind of a story!

Larry from KL gave me the URL of this ‘tale’ which is fabricated by a ‘scambaiter’ to snare the scammers. Thanks Larry for sharing this with us.

“So what is scambaiting? Well, put simply, you enter into a dialogue with scammers, simply to waste their precious time and resources. Whilst you are doing this, you will be helping to keep the scammers away from real potential victims and screwing around with the minds of deserving thieves.”

This is really hilarious and getting back at the African Fund Scam, that we all had been spammed with on a daily basis, is simply delicious.

The Tale of the Painted Breast is but one of the many scambaiting stories there that you can check out. What’s with the 419? Oh, that refers to the section of the Nigerian penal code which addresses fraud schemes. As with the number of scams going on, there are a lot of letters in the archives to read - so happy reading over the weekend!

I’m so glad that there are people who are getting back at these unscrupulous and very nasty scammers. More people should be made aware of these scams as we still continue to read of people being taken for an expensive and painful ride by these scum scammers. *sigh*

'Prince' Joe Eboh contacts me with a classic 419 opening letter. I decide to make him jump through a few hoops before I'm prepared to agree to his proposition, and the results are amusing AND profitable, to the tune of $80 + $49 DHL shipping, so our scammer is down a whopping total of $129/-'

Water Beneath My Wings

posted by FH2o

I like unusual design not just for the sake of it but designs that are not only unique but work well. So I was particularly enamored by this sea kayak called by the intriguing name of “Little Wing” (referring to the flares in the hull design fore and aft) from Warren Light Craft.

Constructed out of Carbon Fiber, Epoxy Resin, Marine Foam Core, the kayak at 32lbs is ultra light. “The closed cell foam core allows Little Wing to be light weight and still withstand collision impacts. The foam will crush under extreme pressure but will not break; an important property for any kayak. The foam provides enough buoyancy to float the kayak even if filled with water.”

What is even more intriguing is the unique shape which is quite unlike any traditional or conventional sea kayaks! And the wings – “The wings, or flares, in the fore and aft allow Little Wing to be both stable and fast. Not only is Little Wing’s stability superior to other high performance kayaks, but with aerodynamic sides and wings that cut through the waves, it is better equipped to handle rough conditions. The wings aid in balancing the kayak in confused and choppy seas in a similar manner to a paddle brace. The wings also make assisted and self rescues easier, especially aft deck rescues.”

Here are some pics from Warren Light Craft’s website.

And how much is the pleasure of owning such a fine craft? It’s USD4,385/- for the base model and there are options for various add-ons and finishes.

Why are toys things we like always so expensive? *sigh*

Sunset Clouds

posted by FH2o

I took these sunset clouds when I got home after a tiring and not terribly productive day at the office. It's always a task to keep the staleness away and to maintain a positive outlook in the face of drudgery and problems. The beautiful skies lifted my spirits somewhat but the blues dug deep. I was still teetering just at the edge when dinner calls and the magic of hot and delicious home cooked meals jolted me that I’m blessed to have a family with love ones and comforts of home to assuage my body and soul. And I am thankful.

Hopefully the productivity tomorrow would be in as equal abundance as these beautiful sunset clouds!

DsD – DVDs Sniffing Dogs!

posted by FH2o

I came across this news item and no kidding; they have successfully trained dogs to sniff out DVDs!

Here we don’t need trained dogs to sniff out pirated DVDs as they are openly on display if you know where to look for them which strangely enough only the general public seemed to know but not the enforcement authorities! Not that I'm really complaining of course!

Perhaps we should get these 2 dogs to train the people here instead! Woof, woof!

From the MPAA press release:

"United Kingdom, Los Angeles - - The Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT), express delivery company FedEx and HM Revenue & Customs, has joined forces to launch an exciting new initiative to help combat DVD piracy.

As part of a project promoted by the Motion Picture Association of America, Inc. (MPAA), FACT instigated the training of two black Labradors named Lucky and Flo by one of the world's leading experts in the field whose other clients include police, fire and rescue service. The dogs were trained over an eight month period to identify DVDs that may be located in boxes, envelopes or other packaging, as well as discs concealed amongst other goods which could be sold illegally in the UK. These DVDs are often smuggled by criminal networks involved in large scale piracy operations from around the world."

Kayaking on an Overcast Day

posted by FH2o

On Sunday we went to scout for a new ‘take-out’ for our River-To-Sea Trip at the Rambungan area. A friend of mine has offered me the use of his beach hut where we can alight and freshen up before the trip back to Kuching. This would save us the trouble of having to paddle back to the ‘put-in’ which I had discovered would be a bit too much kayaking for beginners and especially those who are not that fit. I frequently have to remind myself that I’m easily fitter than most pathetic the average 25-years old! *ahem*

Anyway this was also a wonderful opportunity to take and show Robin who (again) was around for the weekend! The weather was overcast making it a pleasantly cool day for those of us who do not appreciate too much sunlight or who use skin whitener!

Unfortunately the new access road to the beach mentioned by my friend was blocked with wooden barricades. But I knew of another access road to the beach which we took. We paddled from the beach to where we would previously head for and back. The gentle swells were a nice introduction to the conditions of sea kayaking for Robin and "I've-got-visa" Joe who came along with us.

After that we drove around the area to take in the sights and I bought some watermelons which were displayed along the roadside. On the way back and while waiting for the ferry, it started to rain heavily.

All in all it was a pleasant, easy Sunday afternoon and here are some photographs of the gray but beautiful day. A downcast gray for the incumbent trampled at the polls but a pleasant pastel gray for us! Gray can be great!

Our Yucca

posted by FH2o

My other half had been busy over the weekend re-potting one of the yucca we had previously planted in the old house for about 5 years.

For the initiated, the yuccas are dramatic plants with their cluster of sharp looking leaves and thick stem. They have a ‘minimalist look’ that goes well with modern designs. A yucca is the state flower of New Mexico.

However they are not merely ornamental as the fruits and sometimes the flowers of several species of yucca were used as food by Native Americans. Certain species, particularly Y. baccata and Y. glauca, are called soap plant because of the use of their roots for soap. The fibers of some kinds have been utilized.

Originating from Mexico, Central and North America, they belong to the Liliaceae (lily) family and are very expensive here due to their slow growth. They are sometimes planted indoors and the best known as house plants are Yucca aloifolia (dense head of sharp leaves) and yucca elephantipes (loose head of leaves with a swollen base, like an elephant's foot). The latter is also called spineless yucca or pine lily. White bell-shaped flowers may appear after a number of years but ours had yet to flower.

So here’s the pic of the yucca that is the pride and joy of my other half. And if you’re visiting our place watch out for the spiky leaves as you walked past the gate!

On the subject of prickly issues – the loss of the SUPP’s seats in Meradong, Batu Lintang, Pending, Padungan, Engkilili, Kota Sentosa, Kidurong and Bukit Assek will certainly be hotly debated. But it’s undeniable that SUPP’s impotence over the land-lease renewal/high land premium issue is a key factor. And what about higher prices arising out of the sharp jump in fuel costs and the extravagance exemplified by the unnecessary construction of the multi-million ringgit new DUN (State Assembly) building? Or the perception that some of SUPP leaders had enriched themselves and failed to deliver what they had promised (rebuilding of the dilapidated Kuching Chung Hua Primary School No.2 for example)?

After all the urban middle class Chinese (which like yours truly are very good at keeping their political sentiments close to their chest) in Kuching has clearly expressed in no uncertain terms their unhappiness over the current leadership and the way things had been done. These and other prickly issues would need to be properly understood and addressed. Surely nobody would want to get ‘pricked’ again? Ouch!

Trusting that the previously “sure-win” candidates in Kuching are not as clueless as to why they lost their seats. I know of and feel very sorry as well as upset for two of the noble candidates that lost but am 'glad' that the arrogant others have lost. I am politically neutral and these simply reflect my personal (and not political) experiences and opinions of them.

The people have spoken loudly and we hope that the voices of their sentiments and reasons are heard by the powers that be. There can certainly be no doubt as to what the citizens of Kuching are feeling from the results of the voting.

I hope that these voices can finally be heard. Please listen.

Of Mice & Stupid Girls

posted by FH2o

I was most pleasantly surprised when I chanced upon the only sensible music video I had seen for a long time on trashy MTV and Channel V. Not that I really watch them at all as they’re getting more and more semi-pornographic which really turns me off. It was Pink’s ‘Stupid Girls’ and she reflected my sentiments exactly. She's sick of the current scene too.

What with all the young girls aspiring to look and dress scantily like prostitutes these days from the images they get from the music videos. I really do not understand why any female would want to debase and degrade themselves to look like that to impress the guys. You are a thinking person, not an object. Duh! If that’s not stupid I really do not know how to call it, name it or label it. All these young (and not so young) girls had been brainwashed and wants branded attires only and their role models are celebrities like Paris Hilton and the slutty likes. Is it a proud feeling that the whole world has seen you having sex? The strays on our streets do that too!

Yes; guess what - they all wanna be the same! Mindlessly mimicking their favourite celebrities. Whatever happened to individuality and the ability to think for oneself? To be true to who we are and not what other people would be ‘impressed’ with who we think they think we are. Surely we are not what we dress and what we own right? You are defined by what brands you wear or use and the latest handphones? This is massive brain hamorrhage ...

Look at the pictures of white mice I took at the pet shop the other day. The aimless mindless but cute and pretty looking mice. All looking exactly the same. But look closer; as I did and you’ll notice that there are amongst them one or two brown colour ones. But unlike the mice we can choose to be who we are and not mindlessly following what the adverts and media are telling us. This warrants as much serious thought as John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men".

Be who you are by discovering your authentic self and be free. And (unlike George) you don't even have to kill anyone to achieve this!

Short Talk on Kenny Sia's Fans

posted by FH2o

Thanks to a short mention in Kenny Sia’s “Short Talk”; I received over a 1,000 hits than I would normally get on a sleepy Saturday. The finally tally was 1,173 which is of course a trickle compared to the number of hits Kenny's site gets in a day. But awesome for mere mortals like us. That’s the incredible traffic drawing power of Kenny Sia.

But the funny thing was not just the sheer number but the lack of comment(s) from the readers redirected over to me by Kenny’s link. Correction - there was one stewpig negative comment from someone who’s obviously jealous of Kenny’s popularity. If you’re slim and trim; does that make you a better person than Kenny? So why is that so? Perhaps you can let me know. Don't worry - I can handle the truth! It would be enlightening. Here are some speculations:-

  1. My site is lame (or very lame) or ‘not very happening’.
  2. Perhaps they are suffering from ‘shock-n-awe’ on the entirely different nature/concept of my blog.
  3. They are left speechless by the brilliant pics. *ahem*
  4. They are still reeling from the fact that there’s actually life after 40. Must be kind of shocking to find out that someone as old or older than their parent is actually blogging?

Irregardless, thanks for checking out unker’s site and since you all are such fans of Kenny, here’re some more pics of him kayaking like a pro before he ‘keeled over’! Enjoy the pics. Perhaps I can get Kenny to autograph and sell 'em on ebay! Hmmm.

Have a happy Mother’s Day Sunday!

The world is truly beautiful and reveals her selves to us when we open our hearts and eyes. I know I am blessed and I also know I sound corny sometimes (So I’d been told – but what the bleep do they know anyway? I'd rather think that I sound inspiring!) but then again how do you explain these amazing skies/clouds that I’d been able to capture so consistently? Even though I'm using a basic consumer digital camera. Sheer luck? Or do we only see what we want to see in this matrix of life?

I don’t think I’m that good a photographer. But then again maybe I do kickass when it comes to photography and kayaking!

Irregardless, just enjoy these pictures – even Ah Bengs do!

Seasick Passenger

posted by FH2o

We had a ‘seasick’ dolphin passenger; this Vesak morning city kayaking trip requested by City-Lover, who has to be ‘rescued’ or taken ashore. Also on the trip with yours truly was Azmi and Ivan.

Fortunately I remembered someone whose house was next to the river (lucky fella) and luckily for our suffering passenger, this someone was in. (Thank you so much!) After letting him off we continued on with our kayaking trip without further incident. Erm, apart from aching muscles and being breathless that is!

Just because you are 25 doesn’t mean you are immortal and partying all night and trying to get by with 1 hour sleep is no preparation for kayaking with unker lah! Tsk, tsk, tsk!

Raising RM5000 - are you our next swapper?

posted by FH2o

I received this in the mailbox after lunch yesterday. It has been a while since I received a handwritten stamped envelope from overseas. Can I say that the feeling is nostalgic?

My other half used to be in the UK while I was thousand of miles away down under as university student and I get goose-bumps whenever I hear the postman (his name is Lenny) coming (he whistles and sings along; even louder during the festive seasons as he would be almost totally sloshed!) and I would be there waiting for my love letters from the UK. I am digressing.

Anyway SISUAHLAI is trying to raise RM5,000/- for the National Cancer Society and Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society. The following from Sisuahlai is self-explanatory.

Let's do something good for the People. Laughters alone won't feed the needy. Have you heard about the guy who swapped a red paperclip for a house? Completely pointless, but he succeeded nonetheless. Let's do something similar among us- bloggers and blog-readers in Sarawak, Malaysia and All Over The World...

I want to raise RM5000 for the National Cancer Society and Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society. How? By doing series of swaps and trades for bigger and higher value things, until a target sum of RM5000 is achieved. I will start by trading a rare 1869 James Brooke for your item...

The Swapping Story So far...
Francis was the first person to swap. I have sent him a rare 1869 James Brooke stamp in exchange for a "Personalised Irrawaddy Dolphin Watching Trip with FH2o". So my current item up for swap is this kayaking experience. This is a genuine offer. Do you wanna spend a day kayaking with the guru, Francis, alongside dolphins?

Please send in your offer to sisuahlai@googlemail.com.

Are you in?

So are you? What's your swap for my Kayaking Trip? I could even throw in 2 trips - the Dolphins Watching as well as the Rainforest Kayak Adventure Trip. What say you?

Ah Bengs, Ah Sengs, Ah Lians, Ah Huas are also most welcomed! This is a judgmental but ‘inclusive-non-discriminatory’ site!

Happy Vesak Day.

Bad Day Joke

This is a bad day joke compliments of Guan. You can blame him!

Just kidding Guan!

A woman, standing nude, looks in the bedroom mirror and says to her Husband,

"I look horrible, I feel fat and ugly - pay me a compliment".

The husband replies, "Your eyesight's perfect".

Bad Day

posted by FH2o

Bad Day by Daniel Powter

Where is the moment we needed the most
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost
They tell me your blue skies fade to gray
They tell me your passion's gone away
And I don't need no carryin' on

You stand in the line just to hit a new low
You're faking a smile with the coffee you go
You tell me your life's been way off line
You're falling to pieces every time
And I don't need no carryin' on

Because you had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
You had a bad day
You had a bad day

Will you need a blue sky holiday?
The point is they laugh at what you say
And I don't need no carryin' on

You had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
You had a bad day

(Oooh.. a holiday..)

Sometimes the system goes on the bling
And the whole thing turns out wrong
You might not make it back and you know
That you could be well oh that strong
And I'm not wrong

(yeah...)

So where is the passion when you need it the most
Oh you and I
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost

Cause you had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
You've seen what you like
And how does it feel for one more time
You had a bad day
You had a bad day

Magnum Madness @ Marriage

posted by FH2o

I reluctantly went for a wedding dinner on Sunday night. Why reluctant? If you had been to a Chinese wedding dinner, you’ll know how noisy it is and you know how much I ‘enjoy’ karaoke right? After a quiet morning on the peaceful and serene rainforest river, the din was particularly jarring.

If not for the delicious food; I don’t think I could endure sitting through 3 hours of noise and bad singing! Because our table was in the front row where the speakers were, carrying out of any conversation was out of the question. So I flashed a stupid grin whenever someone looked my way.

So I ate course after course; and endured. I sound as if I was suffering. Is this the retribution of bad karma?

Then came the toasting or ‘yam-seng’ and an excuse for more yellings by the Ah Bengs and Ah Sengs of Kuching (they lived their lives for such moments!). There was no respite when it comes to the cutting of the cake as there was the mandatory teasing of the couple by asking them to kiss as they twirl around 10 times. Hmmm, juvenile I thought, but heck people are entitled to their own brand of fun.

Then suddenly these people wearing yellow Magnum T-shirts came on stage and set up a screen and lucky draw. And the bride and bridegroom were asked to carry out the lucky draw numbers! So that was what the pieces of paper distributed to all the tables to sms your bets were all about. The cheek!

A marriage is a private affair and I find it distasteful about the blatant commercialisation of it. Maybe there is something deep and profound in this that Magnum is trying to impart on us? That marriage is also a gamble?

Is this a new trend in marriage? Or are they sponsoring some of the dishes? Can someone enlighten me please; since this unker maybe a little ‘out of this’ with regards.

Irregardless, how I wished I was Dirty Harry (Clint Eastwood not your other revered Harry ok?) with a magnum to put this magnum’s madness to rest!

5 Don'ts When You Are Sleeping

posted by FH2o

I received this from Guan who seemed to have an endless supply of stuff to send me; frequently several emails in the same day! I always wonder where he gets his stuff from! Some of the pics and movies he sent me are very interesting but unfortunately are of an adult or risqué nature and not appropriate for postings. *sigh* Hey! My kid’s schoolmates read my blog ok!

Anyway, here’s one that I like even though unlike Guan, I do not sleep with a bra on! Just kidding Guan!

DON'T SLEEP WITH WATCH

Watches can emit a certain level of radioactivity. Though small, but if you wear your watch to bed for a long time, it might have adverse effects on your health.

DON'T SLEEP WITH PHONE

Putting the phone beside your bed or anywhere near you is not encouraged. Though some of us will use phones as alarm clocks, but please put the phone as far as possible. Scientists have proved that electrical items including mobile phone and television sets emit magnetic waves when used. These waves can cause disruptions to our nervous system. Therefore if you need to put your mobile phone near you, switch it off first.

DON'T SLEEP WITH MAKE UP

People who sleep with make up might have skin problems in the long run. Sleeping with make up will cause the skin to have difficulty in breathing and problem in perspiring. You will also need a much longer time to go into deep sleep.

DON'T SLEEP WITH BRA

Scientists in America have discovered those that wear bras for more than 12 hours have a higher risk of getting breast cancer. So go to bed without it.

DON'T SLEEP WITH OTHERS' WIFE

You may never wake up again …

Dolphins Delight!

posted by FH2o

On Saturday morning, we (Laura, Ivan, Bev and yours truly) set out on an overcast morning to look for dolphins. This is the first trip for Laura and Ivan and as beginner’s luck would have it – we spotted dolphins within half an hour on a delightful calm and cool morning on the bay.

My hand phone rang and an excited Wayne was on the other end eager to know whether we had spotted dolphins already or not. Wayne was coming with a group of people on a motorized boat and before too long they were also at the same spot with us enjoying the sights of the frolicking dolphins!

Ivan was thrilled to bits as was Laura and we were still high when we had our lunch at Buntal Village when we got out of the waters around noon time. Read about Ivan’s account at his blog on “Dolphins Meet Kayaks”. Hmmm and I was thinking that the dolphins wanted to meet us the kayakers!

Pink Bananas Anyone?

posted by FH2o

Our pink bananas tree finally bore fruits! Yes, you heard it right – pink bananas or Musa velutina 'Pinkie'. The bananas and flowers are formed on top of 5 to 6 ft high stalks.

Here are some pics of them. Beautiful aren’t they?

How do they taste like? Unfortunately this is an ornamental plant and the bananas are non-edible. Too bad!

Bev To The Rescue!

posted by FH2o

Isn’t it funny how sometimes in life that the very thing or people you are seeking are also seeking you? And when this happens; well, it’s just wonderful and life is indeed sweet!

Folks, I want you to meet Beverly Chong or Bev for short. Process engineer, triathlon athlete and now kayaker! But my story first!

On early Sunday morning, I had to load the kayaks all by myself as we were running late already with not a sign of Azmi in sight. Finally I managed to get hold of him and he was as sick as a dog. (Btw he's fine now but a little hard of hearing ... *ahem*) I had a family of 5 and another 2 individuals doing our Rainforest Kayak Trip and as I managed to cinch down the kayaks on the 2 cars covered in sweat; I was wondering who on earth was I going to call at this eleventh hour to drive the other car for me. Heck!

Then it suddenly dawn on me that one of the participants on the trip this morning was a young lady who lives about 5 minutes drive away. Why not ask her if she minds driving one of the cars for me? So I called Bev and asked her if she could.

“Not at all and I’ll be there in 5 minutes time!” Bev, you’re an angel!

Turns out that Bev can kayak as well and she didn’t mind at all if one of the kids on this trip is under her wings too! In other words Bev is acting just like my guide instead of a paying customer! And she's loving it!

What's a triathlon? Some of you may ask. Well it's a race where you basically swim 1.5km followed by biking 40km and culminating by running 10km! Piece of cake right? (I break into a sweat just thinking about it!) Well, Bev has competeted in many of these races (more than a dozen since 2003) and has won several (1st, 2nd and 3rd places)!

The great news of course is that Bev would be guiding our kayak trips on the weekends that she is not competiting in any triathlon races! Do I expect to see more guys taking our trips after this post? Heehee!

Kayaking For Families!

posted by FH2o

It was the long Labour Holiday weekend and we were booked for the entire weekend. And taking Livian’s suggestion in our Guest Book to heart that more families should join our trips; it was almost entirely a family affair!

  • On Saturday Donald and Marina from Singgasana Lodge brought along their nephews and nice – Ariez, Adam and Myra for the Rainforest Kayak Trip. Talk about ninja turtle kids; which pale in comparison to the antics of these daredevil kids! Donald later emailed me that they would be posting some of the photos of the trip on their website! He also mentioned that the kids are already pestering their parents for another river trip!
Jason with the Kick and KS ("I must bring my videographer next time!") were also along for the river ride.

  • On Sunday, it was James and Servane’s turn to bring along their kids Morgane, Tristan and Gawen down the river. This time it had rained overnight and the water flow was faster but James and kids were wishing it was faster still! They enjoyed the trip so much these kind folks actually took the trouble to email me to let me know. Their letter is now proudly posted at my Kuching Kayak’s website’s Testimonials! Thank you all!
Neil from UK was the lone ranger on this trip as his partner had to take a rain check.
Bev helped me to keep an eye on things as we floated down the river!

  • On Labour Day Monday, Robert and Josephine took their kids Danielle and Donovan (who at 13 and 11 had already kayaked many times previously) for Dolphins watching. We thought the dolphins had really taken a labour day holiday as well until we spotted a few of them briefly on the way back!

So here are the photos folks! A family that kayaks together stays together! Come and join us!

Now lets all sing along to Sister Sledge's (you don't know who they are? tsk! tsk!) - "We Are Family ... !"

Consolation Skies

posted by FH2o

I broke one of my ‘cardinal’ rules today – “always carry a camera”; and missed the most glorious rainbow I had seen this year. I could have kicked myself.

But as I got home; the skies turned fiery red and the trees looked as if they were on fire and I rushed inside for my camera. As I snapped away, Simon my amused neighbour got home and he took a picture of me taking the sunset! Since he's not like Robin, I wonder what is he going to do with that photo. Hmm.

This is a small consolation to the glorious rainbow but we should gratefully receive all the small mercies that life may throw at us sometimes! I do; so enjoy these ‘small mercies’! Nice huh?

Double Happiness ... on our Terrace

posted by FH2o

I’m very pleased with my purchases of the Perception’s “Surge” tandem sit-on-top kayaks that I bought from my friend, Najib, of ReneGad Quest Sdn Bhd in KL. They are the latest design to come out from Perception New Zealand and their expertise and experience in the design and making of these fine kayak shows.

They not only looked ‘spiffy’ but are comfortable to sit on, stable and tracks extremely well with good hull speed when underway for a recreational kayak. And it turns quite well too; making them ideal for our Rainforest Kayak Adventure Trips fun and enjoyable when tackling the small rapids.

There’s nothing more heartbreaking than to spend your hard earned money on a new kayak only to find them performing miserably. Not all kayaks are the same and the worst thing one can do is to buy a ‘beginner’s kayak’ from a place where the owner is a non-kayaker or who knows as much about kayaking as you do. This literally means that you’ll stay a beginner forever! A kayak that does not track well (would not go in a straight line) and paddles like a bath tub will not be paddled much at all as it would really be a chore and burden to paddle. This is supposed to be enjoyable remember? Under certain circumstances, they can actually be dangerous to be in as these kayaks are almost uncontrollable even for expert paddlers much less for 'beginners'.

I supposed as in most thing in life; something that is supposedly ‘cheap’ is actually very expensive if it’s of little use or does not work well; when something supposedly ‘expensive’ is actually very economical and ‘cheap’ in the long run! Learn to discern the difference.
