Dolsot-Bibimbab (not a kayaking-jargon!)

posted by FH2o

Yes you read it correct. Dolsot-Bibimbab, a Korean dish was what I had for dinner on sunday night. This is not related to kayaking but a kayaker needs sustenance and a variety of them as well. I am not exactly a fan of Korean food but on sunday night we happened to be near Seoul Garden, one of the only two Korean restaurants in town, and haven't patronised the place before we decided to give it a try.

From what I could make out of it, Dolsot-Bibimbab consists of a heap of white rice laid in a heated stone bowl with slices of mushrooms, bean sprouts, crab sticks, minced beef, seaweed, chopped carrots, spinach, raw egg york which is then topped off with hot pepper sauce (not chilly hot though). The dish is stirred just before eating. There must be some kimchi somewhere as the dish tastes like kimchi to me (as do all Korean dishes!). It was something different and as I had not tried other dolsot-bibimbabs, I had no way to make any comparison. But I finished the entire R$13/- dish which I find to be a nice enjoyable change. Must be healthy too as its not oily or too salty; not that this has ever stopped me before!

It’s only later that I found out that Dolsot-Bibimbab is a popular Korean winter dish; which was appropriate as it was raining last night. The word literally means "mixed rice" or "mixed meal." and the dolsot is a stone bowl. Go and try one for yourself! Kimchi anyone?StumbleUpon Toolbar Stumble It!

Turning 15 ... or is it (Goin on 15 and Turnin 50!)

posted by FH2o

Bloggers are funny people; or rather bloggers like me are funny people. Funny in that although we maybe be baring our soul in the public domain without an apparent care on what people may say or think, since it’s our own ‘private’ (huh?) domain but on the other hand we get sensitive if someone makes an adverse comment or worst if no one makes any comment! Whatever happened to our sense of self-worth? Also after a while, we have to remind ourselves to be mindful of ours and our family’s privacy as we become less and less anonymous as snippets of our daily lives (both in words and pictures) invariably gets revealed. It takes more energy to tell a lie and I do not have an inexhaustible supply (of energy); so I blog it as it is. Although Kuching is the capital city of Sarawak; it's still a small town and you and I know that unfortunately, there are some hurtful and hateful people out there.

I started this blog when a friend suggested that I post my kayaking photos I used to email out to friends (and get NO replies or feedback) on a blog as he was sick (or was it lazy) of having to forward my pics to his other friends who ‘loved’ my photos. So I signed up on blogger in June last year and started mucking around with it with some tentative posts and exploring the user interface. So in drips and drabs, I started to blog around July/August last year; feeling all the while like I was ranting to myself. Then sometime in late October I met this guy who was lurking (loitering) outside my house when I just got out of the water and I invited him and his friends in as they expressed so much interest (lawyers are good actors) in my lifestyle (didn't know I had one!), house and the jetty. Anyway when Robin went back to Singapore; we started to use our blogs (he also has a dormant blog like mine then) to keep in touch with each other. In his blog entry he described me as a 'strange but wonderful guy'. Hmmm. Somehow or the other we also visited other people’s blogs and before we knew it we started to have this wonderful circle of friends who visited each other regularly!

Curious as to how many visitors there are to my site, I installed a counter on the 1st of December 2005 after my birthday (when I also changed my template) and now my blog is approaching 15,000 hits since then. It’s nothing in comparison to the well known bloggers (who may get that number in a single day!) but it’s a big figure to this uncle who derives no income whatsoever from this blog; nor am I seeking popularity or approval. It has now become a bad habit - a daily routine and though I tried not to think or make too much about it; there had been adjustments for me and my family to accomodate this obssession pastime. Never in my wildest reckoning would I had imagined that people would be interested in my kayaking, photos and reflections or find them vaguely entertaining. A number of you had become regulars and weird though it may sound, I feel your presence. And I value it and I hope you'll still be reading this when I turn 100!

Joe, now my regular kayaking buddy (who as a non-kayaker met me through my blog) and non-blogger likens my blog to “an easy listening” FM station! I guess he meant it in the nicest possible way and I feel honored that people, young or young-at-heart, would seek me out as an ‘easy listening’ respite in the 'blogosphere' by coming here. I'll keep this blog going for a little while longer as there are still a number of things I don't know and want to learn how to do it properly. If the young punks can do it, so can this uncle and probably perhaps better too! I'd always enjoyed photography but it's only now that I'd discovered writing and I'm learning how to make these sentences 'sing'. And to find my own style.

I have ranted enough, so although they have nothing to do with this post, here are two pics of some red ants infesting one of the mangrove tree and one of clouds; and no, I don’t think there are 15,000 of them there!

Thank you for choosing to spend your time here. I feel honoured and I appreciate your attention and thought on our journey through life. I send you my love.

(A Field Guide to) The Fishes of Kuching Rivers, Sarawak

posted by FH2o

To think that I nearly overlooked this; but fortunately I chanced upon The annotated budak's review of this book in his site.

A Field Guide to the Fishes of Kuching Rivers, Sarawak by Katherine Atak, a British biologist; just been published last month is of particular interests to me as it covers Sungei Sarawak, Sungai Maong and Sungai Kuap; three rivers that I had paddled on many occasions. Hopefully I would in time be able to identify some of the one hundred and two species described with detailed information on the appearance, habitat and distribution in this book. At last now I know how to call the long-snouted pipefish by its proper name!

Time for me to get educated on tropical estuarine biology and I wondered if the good lady biologist makes any mention of the other bigger four-legged inhabitants of the Kuching Rivers! Kayaking anyone?StumbleUpon Toolbar Stumble It!

Friday Reminder:' We're Mere Mortals' (with a Prod in the Back)

posted by FH2o

I felt a pull on my back at lunchtime wednesday; and the pain got gradually worst and by time I was about to leave the office for home, I was 'standing' like the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

My children called me an “Immortal” as I am one of those people who hardly ever fall sick (touch wood). But being human, and as tall people are commonly afflicted with, my Achilles’ heel is my lower back. My poor posture (I tend to slump when I sit) certainly does not help. So before it gets worst, I decided to go for a full body massage at one of the ‘blind center’ massages place; to give them some business as that’s their main source of income. I had previously been massaged by Stewart Renggie (hp 013-8168799) of FortuneLand Health Services Centre (082-241741) and so I called him for an appointment and he was only available at 6pm. So I went straight there from the office. At R$25/- for an hour’s worth, it’s very good value for money in a modest but clean surroundings on the first floor of a row of shophouses just off Rock Road. As Stewart massaged me we chatted between my moaning and groaning when he pressed (shiatsu style) on a tender spot. Stewart is a competent masseur and a relaxed and cheerful person; and I felt grateful for his care and attention.

I walked out feeling much better and relieved that my backache is on the mend. A backache is a gentle (but painful) reminder not to take my back or anything or anyone for granted and to count my blessings; and also to sit upright when typing this blog! Be Well !

I'd better put up this little nag to remind you folks of the meet tonight at Chilax. I'm beginning to sound like I'm organising a function or that I owned the place(!) when this is strictly an informal and casual affair - so no dress codes, airs or pretensions are necessary (just remember your wallet to pay for your drinks & snacks). Just be and come as you are! Looking forward to meeting some of you tonight. Hopefully its not a case of me, myself and I! (Unless I get stood up by gette lah!)

Painted By The Lights

posted by FH2o

Took these photographs which turned out to be like abstract paintings; when I set the camera to "fireworks" mode (which lengthen the exposure time for up to 4 seconds) as I drove on the road. Quite fun actually as you do not know how the photos will turn out to be and the effects can be both surprising and amazing!

Oh yes, and again no time consuming (and tedious) 'Photoshop' or image manipulation is required. And remember to keep one hand on the steering wheel! :o)

Spectacular as this and the CNY fireworks may be; its still incomparable with the magical flickering lights of fireflies as they slow dance amongst the mangroove trees on a moonless night ... Sublime.

Start 'em Young!

CJ all five years of adorable him is fascinated with everything at our house especially the jetty, my kayaks (waaa so many!) and the river. Must be quite a relief from the over 1,oookms drive with daddy, my brother-in-law who works in the land of milk and honey (or rather old and gas) called BSB, Brunei Darussalam - a.k.a. the private domain of the used to be world richest man; the sultan, Hassanal Bolkiah (who was briefly in the news last year when he, 56 married a malaysian newscaster half his age).

Anyway back to CJ (who's more interesting and cute). He was particularly enthralled with my new 'lava-coloured' (red/yellow/red mix) double sit-on-top kayak that was kindly brought from KL to Kuching by Maureen on Chinese New Year's eve. (Some people buys new sports coupe, sofas or entire wardrobe for the chinese new year but I hate to follow the crowd!) And CJ wants 'unker' to take him on the boat and naturally I did with daddy's permission of course who was not too worried as CJ can swim 200meters non-stop at the local swimming pool in BSB! Shame on a lot of us! I repeat - that's 4 times up and down your olympic standards swimming pool! So folks; meet our future olympic swimming and kayaking hope - CJ! Got to keep these photos carefully for posterity sake! And to shame us further; CJ can also play a few simple tunes on the piano. Now everbody, with CJ at the keys - "row, row, row your boat gently down the stream ..."

Meet D'Bloggers Meet @ Chilax 23Feb'06

posted by FH2o

No, I have not gone entomological. This morning as I was leaving for the office ying-yang was sniffing on something on the sliding door – it was a moth I think, and I took a few quick snaps and so here it is and isn’t it beautiful?

But I’m digressing. Anyway I rang Mavis while on the way home yesterday evening and I got an earful, when I told her that I had “blogged Chilax”, that I would be skewered alive by angie, lynnette and pheys! Oh dear ... But since I am already a dead man that had gone past the point of no return; I might as well up the ante! So, let’s have a Blogger’s Meet and bearing in mind the ‘lurkers’ on my site; let’s also make it a Meet the Bloggers Meet at Chilax at 7.30pm this Thursday, 23rd February 2006! Ta da! Thanks to 9lives and gette for the brilliant suggestion (I need to rope in others to share the blame!).

This is strictly an informal and casual gathering, so don’t expect anything – just turn up to chillout and relax lah!

Have your dinner first and bear in mind that Chilax is strictly a non-alcohol and non-smoking venue. Looking forward to meeting you folks there and remember that I need you as body amour to protect me from mavis, lynnette, angie and pheys!

Chillout & Relax @ CHILAX

posted by FH2o

I don’t normally do reviews of food and beverage outlets and hangout places but (there’s always a 'but' in life) because it is such a unique and original concept and in a class of its own (I love originality); I’m going to make an exception for Chilax located along Jalan Song around the corner from Upwell Supermarket, away from the normal hangout places in Kuching. What is so unique about this place that impresses me last night? For starters, they don’t want (or need) any publicity (I am not supposed to even blog this! Um, sorry gals! But I should really share this) and they are only opened from Thursdays to Sundays only; and opening hours are from 7 pm till late. Although Chilax has not ‘officially’ opened; they had already catered to several private functions already. Run by mavis, lynnette, angie and pheys, four of the nicest and most enthusiastic and creative (they designed all the interiors) individuals I had the pleasure to meet; Chilax is unique in what it does not offer – alcoholic drinks, cigarettes (sorry no smoking), TV and food. You can get these at all the other places. What it offers are great drinks, snacks, ambience, music (great CDs selections - just ask), tatami mats, comfortable sofas, latest magazines, comics, books, board games and wait for this, toys!. The décor is modern, tasteful chic and you should check out the toilets!

You must be thinking that this place must cost an arm and a leg; good news is that it doesn't cost anymore than comparable (although there's no comparison really) joints. I had a mango smoothie (no sugar added) for RM8/- and it was great with real mango taste and flavour.

Mavis (head honco) would kill me for saying this (but she'll have to catch me first and I've got longer legs!); but for the discerning, you owe it to yourself to check out this very special place – sorry but you’ll have to wait till Thursday and only after 7 pm! Go chillout and relax at the coolest (best kept secret) place in Kuching by far. Wait till they get their coffee act together and this'll be where I'll chillout often! Oh! And don't tell mavis, lynnette, angie and pheys that you saw it here!

Reflection Ranting on Big Fat Clouds ...

posted by FH2o

I was on my timber deck yesterday afternoon when I saw the above big fat cloud in the sky and I quickly snapped it before it dissipated as I noticed that the clouds were moving. Being big or small and fat is not a joke in this glamorized world brainwashed by the mass media adverts and shows predominantly carrying images of the beautiful people with impossible good looks. Impossible in the sense of being plastic surgically enhanced or constituting less than 0.00001% of the human race actually looking like that. Someone who came back from South Korea recently remarked to me that he wondered where are all the beautiful korean ladies he saw on the korean movies and TV series were; as he was (foolishly) expecting to see all the ladies there looking like that! Duh!

Sad but true that a lot of us judge people by their looks, fame and money rather than their integrity, values or character or what they carry inside. Lucky are those who have less than perfect looks but keep their inner flame alive with high self-esteem and self worth. We are who we are; a worthy human being regardless of how we look and who you think we are. It doesn’t really matter and we don’t really care. We are our own truths.

Haven't you ever come across simple-looking, down-to-earth people who impress upon, and look good to you, in the very first instance? They are the ones who carry an inner, positive glow on their faces. Beauty is nothing but an outlook, and whether you are actually a positive or a negative person will determine whether you look beautiful, or do not; regardless of your looks.

Being out on the waters and at the mercy of nature; I had learned that we are not our name, title or possessions. The water, wind and currents does not care. What will get me safely back to shore are my inner flame of faith, knowledge, skills and experience. Your looks, fame, money and ego will not. Who cares what car you drive and what brands you are using in the eye of the storm? And in the overall scheme of things, have we ever wondered what are the things that truly mattered in life? You haven’t? But you will or in time; should.

And if you, like me, are born less than perfect physically; you shouldn't worry too much about it. The big fat cloud doesn't – it just is, and it changes. And it's part of and belong to that perfect and beautiful cosmic order. Forget about my rantings and just enjoy looking at the big fat clouds! Have A Nice Day! Be well!

River Revelations

posted by FH2o

After the CNY feastings and even more gobblings until Cap Goh Mei; which mark the end of the CNY (and any excusable gluttony); I was feeling positively sluggish with an increased waistline to match. Although I had no plans to kayak after a fouled-up arrangement, the rising tide, gentle breeze and overcast skies was more than I could bear; after all our dinner invitation was still more than 3 hours away.

With Ying-Yang watching me, I shoved off from my jetty and I entered a liquid realm of serenity, gliding away from the world of offensive cartoons (and even more repulsive reactions) and free police CNY hair cuts. What bliss these waters offer to the soul. But before I got too carried away in my perfect world, the dumping of unsuitable fill materials by the bastards people who lived next to the river at the resettlement scheme was appalling and I wondered about the mentality of these people. It was depressing so I paddled on so as not to dwell on it. Around the bend of the river I saw some fishermen and although they were not getting a good catch this afternoon, they still manage a smile. The pollution to the river is certainly not helping them in this regards.

Remembering that happysurfer from KL was curious about the fruits of the mangrove apple trees growing by the banks of Sg Stutong, I took some photos of them. Before too long I reach Sg Kuap and I amuse myself by trying to take some self-portraits which was a fruitless exercise as I don’t think I’m going to look any better from whichever angle I took(!); before turning my kayak around to head back.

On the way back I saw some kids playing by the river bank and seeing me, they hollered at me to paddle over, which I gladly did. I took some snaps of these carefree kids and wondered when it would be before the end of their innocence of their carefree days by the river. I hope I belong to part of that memories.

As I got on my jetty, I marvel that the same river would reveal something new to me each time I get on it; or is it that the river helps us to unravel the true nature about ourselves. Somehow I don’t think that the people around me would be wondering about things like this at the dinner party we would be attending tonight! *sigh*

Life's a Beach!

posted by FH2o

It was a scorcher of a day when I went home for lunch yesterday and when the auto gate opened; ying-yang was not there to greet me as usual – which is unusual. Getting out of the car, I spotted something on the timber deck in the blinding mid day heat and went to take a closer look. It was ying-yang basking in the sun! I took out my camera to take a few snaps of her and she didn’t even bat an eyelid probably thinking that humans should leave napping dogs alone. Oblivious to me and the unbearable heat; there must be some therapeutic reason(s) for her to be in the sun. Anyway here are the snaps of her sunbathing. I know some of you (and definitely the pigeons in Brooklyn) are envious! So who says it’s a 'dog's life'? Not ying-yang the sun lover!StumbleUpon Toolbar Stumble It!

Word Cloud

I love clouds and so I was delighted when I came across this in Ignacio Wenley Palacios' s site; errr it's a word cloud!

And for the uninitated, On Kayaks is one of the most interesting and sophisticated site (kayak or otherwise) that I had the pleasure to come across - jam packed with rich information relating to kayaking interwoven in a convoluted manner that only Wenley can pull off! Do yourself a favour; go over and savour this delectable blog. Be carried away by this suave spaniard's sleek words, graphics and pictures. Everytime I visit, I feel that my site is positively pedestrian by comparison! But I still re-visit!

Here's the word cloud automatically generated from my blog. Try it out on yours too and you can have it printed on your personal T-shirts, mouse pads, coffee mugs and more.

Playing with a Praying Mantis

posted by FH2o

E
very year we have a reunion lunch at our parent's house. Although they had both passed on, we still carried on with the family tradition by getting together once a year with my brothers and sisters together with our families. Going back to the old house brought a flood of memories and I went out to the garden to look at the fruit trees that my mother had planted when she was alive.

My mum has 'green fingers' and every plants and trees her hand touches flourishes (guess that could be why all of us are so tall or big size!). I saw that the starfruit tree was laden with fruits with so many fruits already lying on the ground. I plucked about a dozen or more fruits and brought them inside the house to share with everyone. Just then KH2o gave off a loud shreik! I then noticed that there was a praying mantis amongst the fruits and it promptly jumped onto me. I tried to pry it off my arm so that I could put it back into the tree and when I did, it bit me drawing blood with is sharp incisors.

Here are some pics of this ungrateful praying mantis! You can easily tell from the way it 'poses' where the inspiration for all those 'kungfu' fighting moves comes from! Impressive right? I felt smug that I was able to capture and show it here. So enjoy.

And oh yeah -"living in Kuching is like watching the Discovery Channel sometimes" (quoting my fellow Kuching Bloggers); what with scorpions, snakes and lizards abound - but this is up close and personal; OUCH!

Not Like It Used To Be

posted by FH2o

Happy Valentine Day to everyone; a day that is so globalized and commercialized that it is practically unromantic! But it’s a material world out there and so no occasion is spared; and at the risk of being accused as unromantic (in addition to being pushy and a royal pain!); I really do not like Valentine Day as I’m pretty sure that the majority of the morons people out there do not know the history nor reason for the celebration of this day apart from the vague notion of it being a lover’s day. Do they know that it originated in 5th Century Rome as a tribute to St Valentine, a Catholic Bishop? Or its sordid history? For eight hundred years prior to the establishment of Valentine's Day, the Romans had practiced a pagan celebration in mid-February commemorating young men's rite of passage to the god Lupercus. The celebration featured a lottery in which young men would draw the names of teenage girls from a box. The girl assigned to each young man in that manner would be his sexual companion during the remaining year. How you wished!

Anyway you can read more about it here. And here are some photos I took this morning of the roses I bought for my valentine and as if by magic the water hyacinths decided to bloom in unison as well.

I’m talking too much here and this hypocritical moron is taking his beautiful half for a Valentine as well as Birthday dinner tonight! No, I'm not being a cheapskate here as her birthday really falls on Valentine Day as well! Some of us are luckier than others ... kekeke

Fire In the Sky

posted by FH2o

We had a dinner function to attend but at the last minute, the missus suggested that 'Chinese Valentine Day' or 'Chap Goh Mei' (which literally means 15th night in the 'Hokkien' dialect) should be better spent together with the family. I agreed and we decided on “My Restaurant”, a western steak restaurant at the SamaJaya Roundabout (operated by the ex-chef from ‘Carvery’), as it was highly recommended by one of our friends who eat out a lot (and have the size to show for it!). On the drive there, the skies put on a spectacular display of fiery crimson reds and I could not persuade my family that we stop while I take a couple of quick snaps with threats that they will drive off I get out of the car - nice huh? I drove faster hoping that the light holds when we reached the restaurant; which fortunately it did. And while my family went into the restaurant; I rushed to take as many photos as I could of the fire in the sky. Here are the snaps and am I the only crazy person in Kuching excited by beautiful skies, clouds and water?

So how was the food at “My Restaurant”? We stick with the pork dishes as recommended by our friend and we were not disappointed. Vegans are advised to steer well clear of this joint unless they are happy with salads only. Over porky-indulgence and you are likely to end up with a fire in the belly! Better to just enjoy the fiery skies; I think they are simply AMAZING! Don't you?

posted by FH2o

I saw the above here and as most of us are morons compared to Albert Einstein, here are two quotations from this great mind we may care to note:-

"Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former."

"Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are even incapable of forming such opinions."

Where Do The Children Play?

posted by FH2o

As I was leaving the office yesterday evening, I noticed the beautiful skies and walked to the river banks to take some photos with the trees as silhouette. You know how it is with me and my silly preoccupation (I wouldn't call it a fixation would you?) to take pretty pictures of clouds, trees, water and skies. Just then I noticed a couple of young kids playing in this big old tree and they noticed me too, equally amused that an adult would find some silly clouds fascinating. I broke into a grin and we laughed at each other and they started to put on some antics so that it would warrant me taking photos of them. I was delighted and naturally obliged wishing I had a better camera to capture the magic of these kids at play - open, joyful and totally carefree. I felt privileged to be accepted and to be there. What a joy and a blessing when we allow moments like this into our lives. I am sharing this blessing with you. Take in the joy and have a playful weekend!

Chinese New Year Babe(s)!

posted by FH2o

No, it's not what you think! This is not that kind of site!

Anyway on the day before Chinese New Year's eve, Maureen most kindly brought back from KL for me my new boat! Thank you too Najib for going out of your way to assist me. Some people get themselves a new red car or sofa set for Chinese New Year but I hate to follow the crowd! It was a tandem sit-on-top kayak for recreational use (I am getting more popular now, remember?). When I went to the new nearly completed and crowded Kuching Airport to pick up Maureen and the 'FeelFree Gemini' we were the center of attraction as all eyes were on me as I carried/dragged the kayak from the arrival hall to my CRV. On the way back, I tried but could not come up with any plausible excuse, I mean reasons, to tell my other half why I'm buying another kayak when I already had five of various colours, sizes and types at home! Unlike a set of golf clubs or a tennis racket, its impossible to hide a 14 feet long kayak in your car boot!

The next day I gleefully unwrapped the plastic bubble wrap to see my new acquisition and to take it for a maiden paddle. My niece from Brunei and KH2o were watching me from the timber deck and before too long they too wanted to take it out for a spin! We had to cut our joy ride short when distinct shouts were heard from the house that 'some people are having fun' while there are still a lot of preparation chores yet to be done before the new year. We sheepishly went back but not before I manage to take the following snaps! What excuse did I give and how did she take it? Errr, you don't want to know and I don't like to re-live nor relate painful incidents! Enough said ok before I get into bigger trouble! *sigh* Please just (shutup and stop laughing) enjoy looking at the photos quietly!

Perfect Partner (!)

posted by FH2o

This is bound to happen – I had been ‘tagged’ for the first time all across the oceans by a fellow kayaker in NY, Bonnie aka frogma; who is envious of us wearing shorts throughout the year as their white ass are currently frozen stiff!

I had tried to 'ignore' her tag but what the heck; so let me get this over with this tag!

Qualities of My Perfect Partner

  1. Great body – sleek, streamlined and sexy! And must be absolutely beautiful; no doubt about it!

  2. Adventurous and fearless. (Beautiful and brave! What a combination!)

  3. Strong, tough and reliable. (Am I asking too much here? It's a game right?)

  4. Can weather all storms with me. (And not abandon me when the going gets tough!)

  5. Accept me totally for what I am regardless of my many flaws. (And there are many!)

  6. Always be there for me and never complains whenever I needed/ wanted her at anytime! (I can dream, can't I?)

  7. Little or no maintenance required (!!! I'll get killed if someone reads this!)

  8. Let me love her like crazy! (I can be a little suffocating at times!)

A picture is worth a thousand words – so here’s my perfect partner!

...

Gotcha Bonnie!
And what were you people thinking about?

I can be sporting but folks; no more tags please, thank you kindly! (And I'll 'spare' others the tag too!)

Meandering Down a STRAIGHT WIDE River

posted by FH2o

For the first time, everyone was waiting for me instead of me waiting for them in front of my house at 7.15am when our rendezvous was supposed to be 7.30am. Are they worried that I may blog their tardiness? Since we were early we adjourned to have a quick breakfast and KS, who while doing some research on tourism had stumbled on my site and promptly emailed me, was introduced to the group. KS had kayaked once while on holidays in Pulau Redang, was hooked and eager to get wet again. Since we were going to explore a new river, KS would be paddling with me in my double and as a safety precaution I decided to use my new sit-on-top kayak, which though slower, would be easier to re-enter in the event of a capsize.

We reached Kg Sijingkat and unloaded our kayaks under dark sky and the curious watchful stares of the local kampung kids.

Our plan was to explore Loba Batu Blat, a major tributary of the Sarawak River which connects with Batang Samarahan. Trouble is that it lies across on the other side of the river and we had to cross a busy shipping lane to get there. So we had to sit it out waiting for two ships to pass. Joe suggested we play 'chicken' with them. Waking up too early must have messed up his thinking and judgement!

Finally the ships cleared and as we raced across to Loba Batu Blat in the wakes of the passing ships, Dayang and Joe were all smiles eager to explore this never before kayaked river!

Loba Batu Blat, though its a tributary, is wide and straight before it starts meandering much further downstream. It is a good thing that it is wide as, errr, how do I put it delicately; we were not exactly tracking a straight line! I was taking the stern (back) position with KS at the bow. First we were going left and then right and I had to take corrective strokes to keep us on track. I was hoping that KS would tire soon (like Kenny on our last trip) but no such luck as the more we veered, the more determined he became! In the end I gave up and resort to taking photos while I left KS to his own devices to meander down the river!

Dayang got so bored waiting for us to catch up that she had to resort to all sorts of antics to amuse herself!

While Joe found a rather unorthodox way to ease himself with a paddle as support! Although later he admitted that he was more worried about 'ngap ngap' (mr. croc!) rather than me blogging him. Since you asked for it, I'll have to oblige! To add insult to injury, Joe even had time to make a couple of calls while we play catch up!

The overcast sky turned dark suddenly and we took the chance (excuse!) to head back.

We had been out for nearly an hour and half by then.

Halfway back, it started to rain and we were well, paddling and just paddling in the rain!

Then we reached the part where we have to cross the shipping lanes but fortunately the course was clear but the currents and wind were not! There were small whitecaps and crosscurrents and I had to put away my camera to concentrate on the paddling. I tried to avoid an area where the water was particularly turbulent and guess what - we were carried by the strong currents straight into it! We nearly capsized as KS did a 'dance' up at the bow and I leaned furiously for us to stay upright! From then on I paddled non-stop until the houses on stilts at Kp Sijingkat was in sight! PHEW!

I don't think Joe, Dayang and myself would be paddling Loba Batu Blat again anytime soon! So who was it that was saying that I painted an overly unrealistic rosy picture about kayaking in Kuching? Certainly not KS the trouper as he was all smiles and in high spirits over our saturday morning kayaking adventure despite the meandearing and the mean currents!

Feast for the Eyes and Stomach!

posted by FH2o

Last night one of my best friends, Edmund took us out for dinner at Tom’s before he leaves for Brunei this morning; perhaps reciprocating the dinner we had taken him to the night before. While lazing on the timber deck in the late evening I noticed some interesting clouds formation and decided to take some snapshots of it and I was so glad I did as the evening skies put on a brilliant display that is truly a feast for the eyes. Certainly not a dog day afternoon! I’ll let the smorgasbord of photos above speak for themselves.

Later that evening we went to Tom’s and were ushered to the first floor where Edmund has made a special reservation for a table of 10. The sparse but spacious (not including the back balcony, there was only one table on the entire first floor!), tastefully decorated interior and the quiet surroundings truly make for a pampered and luxurious atmosphere. I ordered the lamb shanks with brown sauce as recommended by Edmund and it was truly the best lamb shank I had for a long time (washed down with fine australian red wine) and the preceding French onion soup was also outstanding. To top it off we had the most delicious durian, yes you read it right, ice cream! Our kudos to Thomas, the owner and chef, of this outstanding restaurant in Kuching; and of course Edmund for his company and treating us there. Now I am well fortified to face the dreaded coming work week after the Chinese New Year!

Bishop's House, Kuching (Of Precious Old Building n Friendship)

posted by FH2o

On Thursday morning I went to pick up an old classmate friend of mine, Yian Kwang, from Bishop’s House on the hill within the spacious and lushly landscaped compounds of the Anglican Cathedral. The majestic and beautiful rain trees of bi-centennial vintage are a sight to behold. Yian Kwang, who’s doing humanitarian work in Kazakhstan for the past 6 years is in town briefly for Chinese New Year.

Taking the road less travelled and living a life of integrity true to one's belief earns my greatest respect and admiration. I feel inspired in his company making me reflect on my own's life path thus far in our journey on this planet. Had I been true to myself and had I answered my calling or found my true vocation?

It’s winter time in Kazakhstan now and according to Yian Kwan, it’s so cold at -25degree below that you'll sweat at zero degree! It's almost a miracle that he had not vaporised in our scorching tropical heat! We adjourned to my place for freshly brewed morning coffee, home-made cookies, good conversation and all things that made this world wonderful! I learned that Yian Kwan could now speak fluent Kazak and has developed a liking for horse meat (so much so he brought some back for his family to try in Kuching!) and milk!

But before that; since it is the oldest dwelling (built in 1849) in town, I took the opportunity to take some snapshots of this historic place while I was there, reveling in the quietude and peace of this sanctuary in the city that truly befit a place of worship. Not a kayaking blog but you can appreciate that as an architect, buildings and places hold a special place in my heart.StumbleUpon Toolbar Stumble It!

A Little Fish Followed Me (Finding FH2o instead of Nemo!)

posted by FH2o

I was happily paddling along and as I glanced backwards to maintain visual contact with Mimik I noticed that a small fish was following me! (I was on a faster sit-in kayak and Mimik was 'struggling' to keep up on his shorter & beamy sit-on-top. His smoking certainly does not help.)

I turned to change course to see if the fish will still follow me - and it did! Then it dawned on me that instead of just savouring the moments; I'd better take a few snap shots of this cute but hideously looking fish - in case you folks might think that I am making this story up ... Its probably thinking that my chilli-red kayak is his big grand-daddy or errr, long lost uncle?

I managed to grab these only 2 shots before the camera-shy fish decided to dive back into the depths of the ocean and disappeared completely out of sight!

Kayaking with 'KFC' (Kenny, FH2o & Co!) - it's finger lickin' good!

posted by FH2o

Here's a quick Chinese New Year Paddle Blog!

We went for a quick paddle near Bau from Krokong to Wind Cave early this morning; the 'quick' being delayed by Kenny (he thought that the 4th day of CNY means Thursday! duh!) and Joe (aka I-Like-To-Sleep-In-Joe). So after a quick breakfast we quickly hit the water with the excitable neophyte quartet of Kenny, Dan, Lau & Mary. Joe was designated as second minder in command.

As predicted the magical river elicited all the 'as-if scripted wows' as all cares and worries floated away amidst the tranquility and beauty of the rainforest. Due to the surprising lack of rain (like someone had just turned off the tap!) the water level was a bit low and at certain places we (or rather I, as my
tandem partner had a rather heavy butt!) had to portage (get out of and pull) the boat. But this did not dampen our enjoyment of the river trip as it was smiles all round (are they trying to disguise the pain of muscles aches and blisters?) at the take-out at Wind Cave.

What a wonderful way to spend the Chinese New Year Holidays!
Kayaking anyone? On second thought I better retract that as there are still a couple of days of CNY holidays left and there are already quite a few of you on the err, waiting list! My humble apologies as I only have so many kayaks and so many 'kayaking quota' in a month! But we'll hit the water, err, one day. I promise!StumbleUpon Toolbar Stumble It!
